ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – A prominent Kurdish drummer Hazhar Zahawi held a performance on the daf, Kurdish drum, timed with International Women’s Day at Erbil’s citadel.
Zahawi invited Iranian musician Asal Malekzadeh to perform with him. They began the evening with a brief discussion about the daf and Malekzadeh explained that it is growing in popularity in Iran, especially among women despite being traditionally played by men only.
A large number of daf lovers attended the performance, which took place on the third day of an exhibition organized by the Nishtiman Youth Network (NYN) in coordination with the Erbil Citadel administration for International Women’s Day.
Some 50 Kurdish women also showcased and sold their handicrafts at an exhibition on Saturday in honor of Women's Day.
