Street music: A calming presence in the center of busy Erbil

By Darbaz Younis 13/6/2018
-
Many things can be found around Erbil's Citadel, which is claimed to be the longest-continuously inhabited site in the world.

Three young people from a different city in the Kurdistan Region have converged in the heart of the capital to bring live street music to the citadel.

Their songs gather crowds. People take videos and photos of the group.

"Daily, I come here and with water until it's chilled. I was selling water as I passed by here, witnessing this music team playing music," said one young water vendor.

People come there to rest and relax while listening to the trio.

"Our aim is to introduce people to music, whether traditional music of nations, or traditional Kurdish [music]. A large number of people like music, and a lot of people are impressed with the gesture because it is new for them. Also, a lot of people have accepted it, gotten used to it, and are happy with it," said one band member.

They hope their presence will bring a more peaceful atmosphere to the hustle and bustle surrounding the citadel and bazaar.
