KRG election: Ballot boxes arrive at commission HQ
Ballot boxes from across the Kurdistan Region are being sent to the election commission headquarters in Erbil following Sunday’s plebiscite. An official preliminary result is expected around 10pm Monday.
Aram Najmaldin, head of the commission’s Erbil branch, told Rudaw votes had been counted through the night. Once the votes in each ballot box have been counted, they are sent to the commission office.
The commission expects all boxes to have been counted and delivered to the commission by 10pm Monday.
He explained that the boxes will be put in three different locations.
“One place is called the area of safe boxes. The second place is called temporary storage – boxes that have shortcomings, meaning they lack a certain form which has not been attached with it by the station, will be put there,” he explained.
“The third will be designated for those ballot boxes that are disputed and draped in red ribbon.”
The Kurdistan Region voted on Sunday to send representatives to the Kurdistan Region parliament.
According to unofficial preliminary results, 57.8 percent of eligible voters cast their ballot.
Several parties have lodged official complaints of fraud.
