ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has dedicated 37 billion Iraqi dinars ($31.8 million) for the Region’s parliamentary and presidential elections, Jutiar Adil, a member of the Independent High Electoral Commission, told Rudaw.
Elections are due to be held November 1. A referendum on independence will be held September 25.
The KRG has also agreed to employ 50,000 people on a contract-basis, being paid 100,000 Iraqi dinars per voting day.
In order to ensure work on the elections is done properly, the KRG has exempted the electoral commission from its reduced-wage policy, imposed as part of austerity measures as the Region battled its bloated public payroll.
The 500 employees of the commission have been paid in full, Adil said.
The spokesperson for the electoral commission had previously told Rudaw they would need 60,000 contract employees and $35 million for the referendum and elections.
