40 Yezidi Children and Elderly Starve to Death on Mountain Refuge

On Tuesday Yezidi leaders said that Kurdish military officials have agreed to form two volunteer units for the local population to join the fight and protect their villages.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region—An eyewitness told Rudaw that 40 Yezidi children and elderly have died of hunger and thirst on Shingal Mountain on Monday.

“The children and the elderly cannot stand the lack of food and water and the aid doesn’t reach all the families who have taken refugee on the mountain,” the witness told Rudaw by telephone.

Around 50,000 civilian Yezidis, most of them residents of Shingal, have spent three days on a dry mountain in the outskirts of town after fleeing the advance of Islamic militants on Sunday.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has coordinated with international organizations to deliver food and water to the refugees by air, but people on Shingal mountain say that the help doesn’t reach them properly.

Shingal, 211 kilometers west of Erbil, fell to the militants of the Islamic State (IS) on Saturday.

Heavy fighting is raging between Peshmerga forces and the IS group near Shingal.

Yezidi leaders have reported that the Islamic militants have committed a massacre against the local population in the past three days, including capturing 500 Yezidi women as hostages.

Shingal’s closeness to the IS heartland has made it difficult for the Peshmerga forces to reach the refugees.

Meanwhile Kurdish fighters from Rojava known as the Peoples Protection Units (YPG) have joined the offensive against the IS and they have retaken several villages near the Rabia border crossing.

On Tuesday Yezidi leaders said that Kurdish military officials have agreed to form two volunteer units for the local population to join the fight and protect their villages.

Yezidi leaders urge world leaders and humanitarian organizations to come to the aid of tens of thousands of civilians displaced by the fighting and at grave risk.

ARABS have supported this. Arabs are buying slaves. Arabs have let ISIS into IRAQ promising cooperation at first. ISIS DAASH could move so quickly across IRAQ with ARAB TRIBAL support. ISIS targeted Peshmerga with ARABS help. Allready suicide bombings are starting in areas where there are ARAB refugees or ARAB tribes. I have one crystal clear suggestion in regards to all ARABS in Kurdish lands. I leave it up to readers to imagine what you would do knowing your sister , wife, mother are being sold as slaves to ARABS. I know what I will do with a clean conscience given the chance. What Kurds will do to prevent this from ever happening again

This is beyond heartbreaking and sadness. I can't believe this happened to our people. If only justice serves, and all DAESH lose their empty pathetic heads over this. Legitimate question : How could we let this happen? Why didn't anybody do something for them?. Their lives should have been our priority. RIP My fellow brothers and sisters :( :( :(

This just makes my blood boil! it reminds me of the exodus by millions of Kurds to Turkey in Iran in 1991, 10-20 thousand Kurds starved and froze to death in the mountains fleeing from Saddams forces courtesy of the Bush administration abandoning us after encouraging us to fight Saddam!, and exactly like last time they played these dirty games with us, for two month KRG leadership have been pleading with the US for cooperation and aid, but they even blocked us from buying weapons! until this disaster struck. I read many in Baghdad were furious that the US helped us today with air support.

For god sake please dispatch help without any delay. This is horrible! I understand Kurdistan is under grave threat. It is time for all of us to mobilize and help. Those who can fight should pick up weapons. Those who cannot fight should help with logistics. The problem is more than a bunch of terrorists. The entire Arab tribes and foreign fighters are attacking Kurdistan. We should not relent any effort in defeating this menace. They brought the war on us. We must all stand up to the challenge. We are all Peshmerga.
