IN-PICTURES: Carrying torch for Kurdistan independence to Newroz mountain
In the Kurdistan Region's Akre city, a large number of Kurds dressed in Kurdish and holding their national flag, held an event supporting the independence referendum in the spirit of Newroz by lighting hundreds of torches at the ancient Akre castle. A symbol of Newroz, the new year, fire is important in Kurdish culture.
The colorful Kurdish men and women jubilantly shouted for an independent Kurdistan.
Kurds have been holding independence rallies and carnivals in and outside the Region as the historical vote approaches.
