ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Broadening ties between the Kurdistan Region and the United Kingdom was the focus of a meeting between Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani and the new UK consul to Erbil, Martyn Warr, on Monday.
Warr thanked Barzani and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) for his warm welcome and hoped for a broadening of relations between Erbil and London in every field, according to a statement from the KRG.
The two discussed the economic situation in the Region and Barzani encouraged British companies to invest in Kurdistan, inviting the UK to make Kurdistan its base for projects across Iraq.
The KRG considers the UK a partner of choice.
The British government has provided military and humanitarian assistance to the Region. Warr pledged his country’s continued aid, especially in military matters.
British MP Jack Lopresti, chair of the UK parliament’s all-party committee on Kurdistan,
recently told Rudaw that his committee supports economic reforms and diversification in the Region. “We would not be good friends if we failed to highlight an economic model that sustains poor productivity and imperils its potential to increase the well-being of tis people.”
