ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The US State Department has approved a possible sale of military equipment to the Peshmerga to an estimated cost of $295.6 million.

The sale would include equipment to fully outfit two Peshmerga light infantry brigades and two support artillery battalions, a statement from the Defense Security Cooperation Agency detailed on Wednesday.

A wide range of equipment was requested for purchase, including machine guns, armoured vehicles, body armour, small arms, chemical weapon detection and protection equipment, medical equipment, MRAPs, and ambulances.

The sale would assist in the defeat of ISIS, the statement said, adding it would not “alter the basic military balance in the region.”

The sale has not been concluded as of yet.

no money, dire economic times? 20 billion in unpaid loans, oil prices are low and krg borrowing to pay salaries, yet somehow almost 300 mill is found to be spent on arms? how and where is this coming from? surely Baghdad would own 83% of that and any and all loans borrowed? double standards and hypocrisy

it needs congressional approval, and they will reject it like they did in june 2015

The US provides over $3.5 billion in military assistance to Israel and $ 1.5 b in support to Egypt. KRG or Iraq has to pay for weapons to fight Daesh??!! Isn't Daesh a terrorist organization that intends to destroy no only Iraq but the civilized world? Can't the US donate the weapons as they do to Israel and Egypt. Shame on you Trump. This money would have helped basic necessities people of Kurdistan and Iraq who need the money badly!

This is a very GOOD NEWS, and something that Obama Administration would never have done! I am glad this is happening.

Sell them $300 million in light arms, and give them $500 million in heavy arms.
