ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The Iraqi army has taken control of areas northwest of Mosul, including a number of oil wells, the army’s media cell announced Friday evening.

The 15th army division took full control of Zummar and Ain Zala districts on the southern edge of the Tigris about 70 km northwest of Mosul.

They have also taken control of the Batma and Ain Zala oil fields and a total of 44 oil wells.

Iraqi forces this week have taken control of the majority of the disputed areas, claimed by both Erbil and Baghdad but had been largely brought under Peshmerga control during the war against ISIS.
