ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Two people have been arrested in connection with the killing of Dr. Wushyar Ismail, Erbil security forces announced on Sunday. The Islamic cleric was killed in front of his house in Erbil last week.
“The main murderer and his associate have been arrested Sunday morning and have confessed to their crime in the preliminary investigations,” the Erbil Asayesh, Kurdish security, said in a statement.
The arrests were made following an “extensive and detailed investigation” into the killing, which is still continuing.
The announcement came just after hours Kurdistan’s Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani told reporters on Sunday that they have got “good news” regarding the results of the investigation.
Ismail was shot multiple times by unidentified armed men in front of his house Tuesday night in Erbil.
He was an Islamic preacher at a local mosque in Erbil, and linked to the moderate Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU). He also had a TV program on the KIU’s satellite channel Sped TV.
“Mr. Wushyar was a famous and dear personality in Erbil. We will not pass by his killing easily, and in this regard all security institutions have been assigned to find a clue or a suspect,” Erbil's police spokesperson, Hogir Aziz, told Rudaw on Wednesday.
KIU media described the killing as a terrorist act.
All the local Kurdish parties condemned the killing and called for those responsible to be brought to justice as quickly as possible.
President Masoud Barzani said in a statement on Wednesday that the murder was “an act perpetrated against moderate voices and coexistence.”
