ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Kurdish pop singer Helly Luv met with children at an event in the Kurdistan Region's capital of Erbil on Wednesday to distribute gifts for the New Year.

“I wanted to do something for children, because I remember from my childhood that I always wanted to receive a gift on the occasion of the New Year,” Luv told Rudaw.

The humanitarian said they prepared 500 gifts for displaced from Kirkuk that included toys, clothes plus colorful balloons plus children enjoyed face-painting.

The event was funded by Erbil Steel.

Kirkuk city, the capital of the diverse province, has been home to Kurds, Turkmen, Arabs, and other groups. It came under the control of Kurdish Peshmerga in 2014 after the rise of ISIS.

After the events of October which led to the takeover of Kirkuk by the Iraqi army and Hashd al-Shaabi forces, thousands of people including officials from the city fled home in Kirkuk and Tuz Khurmatu.
