Peaceful protest against flight ban at Sulaimani International Airport

Against the Iraqi government’s rulings, notably a ban on international travel to and from the Kurdistan Region, a peaceful activity organized by more than a hundred youth was held in front the Sulaimani airport where hundreds of balloons were set free into the air carrying ‘Yes for the independence of Kurdistan’ message.
In response to the Kurdistan Region’s independence referendum which was held on September 25, the Iraqi parliament a few days later issued a series of orders to ban flights, shut the borders, close foreign representations, assert control over oil exports, and deploy troops to disputed areas.
The Kurdistan Region’s election body announced over the weekend that 92.73 percent of voters chose independence for Kurdistan in Monday’s referendum.
