ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – As Kurdistan’s farmers are harvesting their crops, the government will impose a tax on some imported agricultural crops in order to boost sales of local fruits and vegetables while they are in season.

The tax will be imposed starting in June.

“We have a list of taxes that we follow throughout the year. The imported products that will be taxed starting the beginning of June include tomatoes, watermelon, pepper, troze [a type of cucumber], eggplant, and peaches. For every kilogram of these products, 250 Iraqi Dinars will be imposed,” Abdulstar Majid, the Kurdistan Region’s minister of agriculture, told Rudaw.

The aim of the tax is to support local products that are harvested around this time, Majid explained. The tax will remain in place until the end of the local season.

The central government in Baghdad is also imposing restrictions to protect local production. On Monday, the spokesperson for the Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture, Hamid Naif, announced that they have banned imports of tomatoes and watermelons to Iraq.

In the Kurdistan Region, the Ministry of Agriculture also imposes seasonal taxes on other foods, including yogurt, chickens, eggs, live and frozen fish.
