ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – A French paratrooper has been killed in combat during a mission of the US-led global anti-ISIS coalition on Saturday.
French President Emmanuel Macron announced the death in a statement saying the paratrooper was killed in combat in the Iraqi-Syrian zone. A statement from Elysee palace saluted the soldier, “killed in the accomplishment of his mission for the defense of our country, the protection of our fellow citizens, and the fight against barbarism.”
The coalition confirmed the death, issuing a statement that simply said, “A French Coalition service member was killed in a combat-related incident in the Middle East Sept. 23,” leaving it up to French authorities to provide further details.
This is the first death of a French soldier in anti-ISIS operations in Iraq and Syria since operations began in 2014, according to AFP.
