In the first day of the battle against ISIS for Mosul, October 17, the Peshmerga liberated 9 villages and cleared 200 sq.kilometres of territory.
Iraqi troops liberated three villages.
The battle has northern and southern fronts. The Peshmerga are in the north and the Iraqi army is in the south. They are backed from the air by coalition jets.
ISIS has been in Mosul since June 2014.
The ultimate goal of the offensive is to drive ISIS out of Mosul.
