ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Shiite Hashd al-Shaabi announced the killing of one of its high-ranking leaders by Peshmerga forces near Mosul dam on Tuesday.
Ahmad al-Asadi, spokesperson of the Hashd al-Shaabi announced that in clashes with the Peshmerga to prevent “conspiracies”, Ahmed Obeidi, assistant to the head of Hashd intelligence known as Abu Yasir was killed.
Asadi added that Obeidi was killed while preventing the last trial “to separate and partition” Iraq.
Tuesday, one day after Peshmerga withdrew in Kirkuk and Iraqi forces including Iranian backed-Hashd al-Shaabi broke into the city, clashes occurred between the Peshmerga and the Hashd forces near the Mosul dam.
According to Peshmerga officials, eight Hashd were killed as well as one Peshmega soldier in the confrontation.
Sheikh Ali Rumani, a Peshmerga commander stationed at the west Tigris River told Rudaw that the fighting erupted because of lack of coordination and prior knowledge of the attack by the Hashd.
In a Facebook post before his death, Obeidi mentioned that they were on their way to the Mosul dam.
He had said those trying to separate Iraq “are still on the run.”
The Iraqi forces, supported by the Hashd al-Shaabi continued on Tuesday to take control of more areas that were previously held by the Kurdish Peshmerga for the second day in a row which mainly included Bashiqa and Yezidi Shingal in Mosul, Khanqeen in Diyala province.
