ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Qatar and Iraq have agreed to create a new maritime line between their two countries in a bid to strengthen transportation ties.
Jasim Bin Sayf al-Sality, Qatari minister of transportation and communication, hosted his Iraqi counterpart Kadhim Finjan al-Hamami on Monday.
“In the meeting, the opening of a new navigational line to the Umm Qasr port in Iraq was announced,” read a statement from the Qatari ministry.
Umm Qasr port is in the southern Iraqi city of Basra.
Ships will begin traversing the new route on May 1.
Qatar has been under a blockade for months, imposed by Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt, accused of supporting terrorism and destabilizing its neighbours.
Doha has consequently strengthened ties with Turkey and Iran.
Baghdad has taken a route of balanced relations with everyone and has declined to enter into regional disputes.
