Nineveh Governor Casts Doubts on Baghdad’s Reasons for New Provinces

ERBIL Kurdistan Region – Nineveh Governor Atheel Nujafi accuses Iraq’s Shiite-led government in Baghdad of planning to turn Tal Afar and the Nineveh Plain into provinces in order to facilitate a shorter route for Iranian aid to the Syrian regime.

"Reviewing the maps show that the two provinces proposed are located on the shortest route between Iran and Syria in Mosul," Nujafi said in a statement seen by Rudaw.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki’s government has been accused by the West of allowing Iranian lethal and non-lethal aid to pass through Iraqi land and air routes en route to Assad’s regime, which Tehran backs.

According to Nujaifi, there has been a systematic plan by the government in Baghdad to divide and cut off Nineveh in order to fuel sectarianism in the province.

Last week, Iraq's Council of Ministers decided to turn Tuz Khurmatu in Saladin province and Talafar in Nineveh into provinces and recommended a study to turn the Nineveh Plain and Fallujah into additional Iraqi provinces.

The decision raised the ire of Iraqi Kurds, because Tuz Khurmatu and Tal Afar are both within the so-called “disputed territories” claimed by both the autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in the north and the Arab government in Baghdad.

"The bombings and targeting of innocent people in the Nineveh Plain led to the formation of regiments from the same sect and calls to bring in troops from outside the province to protect one of the components of the region, and then the official call for the establishment of the two provinces," said the governor.

Nujaifi blamed internal struggles for causing the situation, without specifying whether he meant internal frictions within the components of the province or within the Sunnis in Iraq.

The Nineveh Provincial Council and the governor have threatened to turn Nineveh into an autonomous region similar to the KRG, should Baghdad go ahead with plans to divide the area into additional provinces.

Implementing a safe haven for Assyrians in the Nineveh Plains is the best thing for the region to stabilize the country, politically and economically (To also protect federal Iraq), to enhance Assyrian culture, and to add balance into the equation. These statements by Nujaifi are irrational. Nujaifi is also a Sunni-Arab supremacist that doesn't respect other ethno-religious groups (whether Turkmen, Kurd, Assyrian or Shia) So please watch out from him. Nujaifi even once claimed that Nineveh Plains is 95% Arab Sunni, and yet Arab Sunnis dont even make up 5% of Nineveh Plains - This is proof that he has the genetics of Saddam and his Arabization policy.

So the allegation is that Iran would be arming Syrian Kurds in Syria? Because the Assad regime does not control regions adjacent to Nineveh, they are Kurdish or under control of jihadis and friends. Coincidentally: the plan would split up this dude's province, reducing his power and ability to profit from corruption. OR... Beware the Shia-Vegetarian conspiracy. Your grandmother is next!

@AshurayaPlasha how can giving a small minority an entire region of Iraq be helpful? it will make matters 100 times worse! and who are assyrians to stabilize Iraq? are you feeling ok? I can assure you that we're not going to divide Iraq more than it already is! You people used to be loyal, what happened to you? if your going to turn into Kurds except to be treated like them, the Kurds have backers who do you have?

@Raaed: Assyrians remain loyal to our need for stability; not to anyone out to murder our youth and elders in order to intimidate our people. There's nothing "loyal" about an Arab-driven law that defies our indigenous people of the land. All that's sought-after is the destruction of our rights, lands, and culture due to our conflicting Christian beliefs. Kid someone else about what's sought after. We "only" have centuries of mass murders, genocides, and complete isolation to prove that point. What's yours? To be "loyal" to an Arab political party that seeks only to destroy what's left? Arabization is a plague that needs to be severed from politics and from what little land we have left to call our home.
