First look at Tal Afar after ISIS as Iraqi forces claim victory
After just eight days of fighting, Iraqi forces declared victory over ISIS in the northwestern Iraqi city of Tal Afar on Sunday. The Iraqi army, federal police, and Hashd al-Shaabi made swift advance against the militants in the largely Turkmen city that was once a key site for ISIS on the route between Iraq and Syria.
Iraqi forces took the historic city centre with its Ottoman-era citadel on Saturday.
They also discovered at least two mass graves containing the bodies of some 500 prisoners killed by ISIS. Another 18 bodies were discovered in a prison in the northern part of the city on Saturday.
