In pictures: Death haunts Afrin under intense Turkish strikes

Turkish artillery and air strikes have claimed the lives of at least 68 civilians, injured around 165, and caused the internal displacement of at least 15,000 in the districts surrounding the Kurdish city of Afrin since January 20.

Kurdish health officials put the number of the civilian deaths at 104 as of Thursday.

Turkey denies targeting civilians as part of its military intervention, known as Operation Olive Branch, which is aimed at driving out Kurdish fighters in the northwestern enclave of Syria.

But both the conflict monitor Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and Russia, whose military is stationed across the country, have reported hundreds of casualties.

The United Nations children’s agency UNICEF has documented the deaths of at least 11 children.
Funerals attended by hundreds of people have become a daily occurrence in a region that was largely spared during the seven-year Syrian civil war.
