ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A Kurdish official in Syria claimed that the autonomous cantons in Syria Kurdistan (Rojava) will be dismantled and replaced by a federal system.

"A conference will be held in the town of Rmelan by the democratic self-administration cantons in Rojava to discuss their dismantlement," the official told Rudaw, adding that "in their place, a federalism system for Western Kurdistan [Rojava] will be declared."

At the conference a committee will be formed to prepare procedures of federalism rule to replace the administration of the cantons, the source claimed.

The leader of the ruling Syrian Kurdish Democratic Party (PYD) Salih Muslim recently seemed open to the idea of a federal solution to the fractured Syrian state telling Reuters that, "What you call it isn't important. We have said over and over again that we want a decentralized Syria - call it administrations, call it federalism - everything is possible."

Rojava, a de facto autonomous region, consists of the three cantons in the northern part of Syria named Jazira, Kobani, and Afrin.

According to obtained information by Rudaw  that all elements living under the rule of the cantons - Kurds, Arabs and Turkmen alike - will take part in the conference to have their say as well.

On Monday the 13-member conference preparation committee begun their preparatory work for the conference.

Good step by the people of Rojava and a very wise move what they've done including every sect and ethnicity in the decision. The PKK insists on cantons so this proves that the PYD is no way under the same structure of PKK. I hope the PKK also buries the idea of 'cantons' once and for all.

You need to capture the whole area first, before you talk. And besides, will the Syrian Arabs be OK with giving the 'oil' regions to the Kurdish federation?

This is an important and welcome development. We wish you all the best, Kurds and all other ethnic inhabitants of Rojaja for a successful federal state. This is a wonderful map if it becomes reality!

The subject of this so called conference has nothing to do with a truly autonomous self-ruling status of Western Kurdistan within "federative" Syria. PYD has established a so called "common coordination international centre" of the northern region of "new" Syria, which is to include those three "democratic cantons". Among 13 members of this CCIC are one or two kurds, arabs, turkomans and representatives of smaller ethnic groups, including assyrians, armenians and even chechens. PYD is actually and obviousely acting in favor of the Syrian regime and Iran, using thousands of very naive and ignorant young Kurds from all regions of Greater Kurdistan as sacral victims. Everything that PYD-PKK have been doing especially in recent years has been against the Kurdish natiinal issue, against freedom of the Kurdish people to prevent any sovereign statehood of independent Kurdistan. Unfortunately for supporters, apo-fanatics of PYD-PKK pseudo "revolutionary" political tandem, but this is the true fact.

I disagree. A no fly zone is exactly that, a zone that prohibits certain aircraft from flying in that zone. In Iraq, its purpose was to prevent Iraqi...
