ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – A HDP deputy co-chair has been sentenced to a year and a half in jail for organizing a protest in front of the prison where she is currently jailed.

Aysel Tugluk was sentenced on Tuesday for “organizing and managing” illegal protests in front of Kocaeli Prison, Hurriyet Daily News reported.

Tugluk had pled not guilty.

She was originally arrested in December 2016 and charged with “managing an armed terrorist organization,” namely the PKK.

HDP condemned Tugluk’s arrest and detention as illegal and politically motivated.

Tugluk is one of eight HDP deputies currently in jail on terror charges, including co-chair Selahattin Demirtas and former co-chair Figen Yuksekdag.
