ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The president of the regional government of Catalonia Carles Puigdemont has asked the parliament to suspend the outcome of the independence referendum held on October 1, despite saying the majority of people voted to leave Spain.

He said on Tuesday evening that they have received many calls for mediation and dialogue from leaders and bodies in Europe and across the world and they are going to respect that by suspending the results.

Puigdemont said the people voted overwhelmingly in support of separation from Spain and his government has obtained a “mandate” from the Catalan people to seek an independent state.

“We propose to suspend the effect of the independence declaration... in order to work towards putting into practice the result of the referendum... Today, we are making a gesture of responsibility in favour of dialogue,” he said, according to the Guardian.

Catalonia held its referendum despite the opposition of the Spanish government and a ruling by the Spanish Supreme Court that the vote was unconstitutional. The Catalan government had said before the referendum that they would declare independence within 48 hours of knowing the result of the vote.

Madrid did not rule out triggering Article 155 of the constitution that allows for the federal government to dissolve the regional government and take over the civil administration. The constitutional article has never been used before.

Puigdemont also took the opportunity to condemn police violence that saw many injured on the day of the vote.

There is the case for Catalan independence , but there is no such a majority of popular vote for it.My sympathy goes for the Catalan independence, but I can assert that there is no sufficient electoral support. Unfortunately the most virulent opponents of the separation are old and well established Catalans. This is why the intent has failed. I' am a Kurd and I well know what is going on there. I would ask that no body try to draw any comparison between Kurdistan and Catalonia , other than the mere and legitimate desire for Independence. Any other false comparison would harm the Kurdish case

There is considerable fascism on both sides , I can tell you as someone who is acquainted with the Iberian peninsula , its history and its culture. There are ,of course, reasons for the Basque and Catalan independence; I would even support the Aragon independence as well as the Catholic Andalusian independence. The Iberian peninsula should be fragmented into its original entities ,where dear values of decency, beuty and justice would prevail and people would recover their character and dignity hitherto oppressed by the hegemonic Castillan dominance .

All has been like a simple street row, or simply a street protest, sadly .

The referendum in Catalonia was a mess. They rushed it perhaps to do it close to more publicized and better planned referendum in Kurdistan and without thinking about plan B in Catalonia (e.g. by e-voting) and as a result the turnout was 43% which is not a strong majority of eligible voters. It doesn't look good and the countermeasures used by Spain is being copied by Baghdad against Kurds. Catalonia is not landlocked and they can declare independence, but the leadership seems confused and not well prepared. Let's make sure that we do not make their mistakes in signing and declaring independence. It should be run smoothly and like a well planned military operation.
