ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – A Canadian employee has died while working at a gas field in Chamchamal, Sulaimani province, according to reports.
Ramak Ramazan, mayor of Chamchamal, told Rudaw the reported fatality was caused by a gas leak at the facility, operated by Emirati firm Dana Gas. Two other employees were reportedly affected by fumes, but recovered.
The incident took place around 0130 local time, Ramazan said.
Rudaw has approached the Canadian Embassy for confirmation.
Early reports indicate the Canadian employee worked for the Texas-based Parker Drilling, which operates inside the Kurdistan Region. The firm declined to comment when contacted by Rudaw.
Ayoub Hama, deputy director of Chamchaml’s health bureau, told Rudaw the employee was taken to the local hospital, but declared dead on arrival.
The body has been moved to Sulaimani’s Forensic Department to determine the cause of death.
