ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Suleman Sahed Chirukaya, the Kurdish forces’ leading bomb disposal expert and the man credited with saving hundreds of Peshmerga lives on the frontlines, died in a hospital in Germany on Saturday of wounds suffered while defusing an ISIS bomb last week.

Chirukaya was wounded last Wednesday as he was defusing a bomb inside an ISIS tunnel at Big Tizxrap village on the Bashiqa front, east of Mosul. He was evacuated by helicopter to Erbil and later flown for treatment to Germany, where he succumbed to his wounds, sources told Rudaw.

Chirukaya had moved to Germany recently but returned to Kurdistan at the start of the Mosul offensive against ISIS earlier this month to help the Peshmerga defuse the many bombs and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) that the militants have been leaving behind as they lose territory and retreat.

Because of the many ISIS bombs he had helped defuse, he was known among the Kurdish forces as “the savior of hundreds of Peshmerga lives.”

The offensive to evict ISIS from its Mosul stronghold began October 17 with a Peshmerga advance.
