KRG makes deal with Iran to export agriculture products
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Kurdistan Region’s minister of agriculture and water resources, Abdulsatar Majid, met with his counterpart in Iran on Monday, looking for external markets for the Region’s products.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources said in a statement that they have asked the Iranian agriculture minister and other officials to facilitate Kurdistan Region exports to Iran.
“The Iranians agreed to our request,” the statement read. “Our businessmen can buy the farmers’ products and export them to Iran through the border gates.”
In February, the ministry began “sponsoring” exports of agricultural products by lifting taxes on traders. The government has been boosting the agricultural industry recently. In 2016, farming revenues topped a billion dollars.
Majid’s ministry is also responsible for water resources. The Kurdistan Region is in the midst of a dispute with its neighbour after Iran blocked the flow of the cross-border river Zei Bchuk, or Little Zab. The statement did not mention whether this issue was discussed by the two ministers.
