Kurds return to farming to combat a struggling economy

Farmers started planting farmland that used to be barren.

They want to prevail over the financial crisis that the Kurdistan Region is facing.

Increased farming in Kurdistan due to the crisis reminds Kurds of the 1970s.

Some 40% of the Kurdistan Region’s land is suitable for agriculture.

But agriculture, as a source of income, has not been focused on for the last 20 years.

The government, therefore, had to import fruits and vegetables, which moved a lot of wealth out of the region.

The agriculture sector is a main source of income.

Agriculture needs little investment but has high profits.

Some 67% of Kurds in the Kurdistan Region used to be farmers.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture, only 16% of people in the Kurdistan Region work as farmers today, due to economic growth in recent years.
