ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iranian media on Saturday reported several explosions near the country's major oil hub of Kharg Island in the Gulf, with one outlet claiming an Iranian oil tanker had been struck by a US missile, as fighting between Tehran and Washington intensified.
The Student News Network (SNN), citing local sources, said an Iranian oil tanker near Kharg Island "was targeted by the US," without providing further details.
There was no immediate confirmation from Iranian authorities or US officials of a strike on the vessel.
Fars news agency separately reported that the sound of several explosions had been heard from the Persian Gulf near Kharg Island.
Its correspondent on the island said the explosions appeared to come from the Gulf, but that no smoke or fire was visible.
Fars said no official information had been released on the cause or origin of the explosions.
Kharg Island, off Iran's southwestern Bushehr province, is the country's main crude oil export terminal and a strategically important part of its energy infrastructure.
The reports come less than a week after direct fighting between Iran and the United States resumed following a month-long lull.
US forces on Sunday struck Iranian military targets on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz, saying they targeted rocket launchers and equipment intended for deploying sea mines. Iran responded with attacks against US positions and Washington's regional allies.
US President Donald Trump subsequently threatened further strikes against Iran and posted an AI-generated video purporting to show Kharg Island being destroyed, although there was no evidence the island had been attacked at the time. Iran's state oil company said operations on Kharg had not stopped.
Trump on Friday again threatened military action against Iran, saying Washington was closely monitoring activity in the country.
Kharg Island's importance to Iran's oil industry means any confirmed attack on infrastructure or tankers in its vicinity could mark a significant escalation in the conflict.
