ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kamaran Dartash, a Kurdish stone sculptor from Kirkuk collects unique pieces of stones at his little workshop at his house, making marvelous sculptures out of them.
Before embarking on sculpting, Kamaran was a carpenter in Iraq's capital city Baghdad.
His success in his new career has emboldened Kamaran to continue in the new business in which he has found his talents.
“Back in the days, Homo sapiens started the sculpting industry in the caves, dating back millions of years ago, and his work still remains with us," Dartash told Rudaw over the weekend.
Dartash has taken part in many art fairs and organized many others to showcase his sculptures, efforts that made his works popular. His art pieces represent mothers in general.
Dartash started his career to make sculptures as a hobby. But, his artworks have now become the main source of income for himself and his family.
Making prototypes out of clients’ ideas has become his specialty and Dartash stated that “I make a few rough sketches and prototypes for them, so it can be relatable to what they have in mind.”
His experience in the field led him to create complex sculptures that illustrate different ideas and most of them are about mothers.
He mixes different stones to create his vision and sculptures. He mentioned that “ I'm the first person who created this gun piece with stone. The gun is made out of black marble stones and granite marble. The base that holds the sculptor is made out of white marble,” He added.
Dartash is working with basic tools, but his mind is full of creativity and innovation when it comes to making sculptures.
His children and wife became a source of inspiration that influenced his works.
