ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A suspected Islamic State (ISIS) attack on a power transmission tower in western Anbar province put the facility out of service late Friday, said a councillor on Saturday.
“At 9 pm last night, ISIS militants targeted a power transmission tower on the Baiji-Haditha line by planting explosives,” Saad Ghazi, head of the security and defense committee of the Anbar Provincial Council, told Rudaw’s Gashaw Khalid.
“The location is remote, and the tower is in the Abu Delaia area of Haditha district. The explosion put the power tower out of service,” Ghazi added.
The Baiji-Haditha transmission line links Haditha in Anbar province with Baiji in neighboring Salahaddin province.
Ghazi said security forces arrived at the site at around 5 am local time on Saturday and secured the area.
ISIS seized swathes of Iraqi territory in 2014 but was territorially defeated in the country in 2017. Remnants of the group continue to operate in remote and desert areas, carrying out sporadic attacks against security forces and infrastructure.
