It is with profound sorrow and grief that Rudaw Media Network announces the passing of our colleague, Halkawt Aziz, Rudaw's correspondent and Baghdad bureau chief.
On Monday afternoon, June 8, 2026, Halkawt Aziz passed away due to the severity of his injuries after being involved in a traffic accident on the road between Baghdad and Basra.
Halkawt Aziz was a talented journalist, a tireless professional, and a devoted member of the Rudaw family. He consistently covered events with credibility, honesty, and professionalism. Through his unwavering dedication to his work, he left a clear and lasting impact both on screen and in the hearts of his colleagues and the people of Kurdistan.
Halkawt Aziz, originally from the city of Kirkuk, was born in displacement in Erbil in 1989. He held a diploma in directing from the Theatre Department of the Kirkuk Institute of Fine Arts and dedicated nearly 16 years of service to the field of media.
He joined Rudaw Media Network on December 20, 2015. During his time with Rudaw, he produced remarkable work and unforgettable reports. His extensive coverage of the Basra protests in June 2018, along with his moving reports on the discovery of the remains of Anfal victims in the deserts of Samawa in July 2019, stand as only a few examples of his professionalism and courage in conveying the truth. With a powerful human voice, he told the stories of the Anfal children who had clung to their mothers during the executions.
The sudden passing of Halkawt Aziz has been a tremendous shock to all of us. He was not only a successful journalist but also won the affection of everyone through his kindness, generosity, and warm spirit. Halkawt's service, dedication, and vibrant character will forever remain in Rudaw's memory.
We extend our deepest condolences and sympathies to his family, relatives, friends, and all Rudaw viewers, listeners, and readers. We pray to Almighty God to grant patience and strength to all those affected by this loss and to bless the deceased with eternal peace in paradise.
May his memory always be honored, and may his pure soul rest in peace.
