ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and Baghdad Governor Atwan al-Atwani on Wednesday emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation between the cities of Erbil and Baghdad, focusing on public services, development, and municipal affairs.
President Barzani received al-Atwani and an accompanying delegation in Erbil.
“The meeting emphasized the importance of strengthening coordination between Erbil and Baghdad as Iraq’s two main administrative centers, particularly in the fields of public services, development, and municipal affairs, with the aim of improving services provided to citizens,” read a statement from the Kurdistan Region Presidency.
Barzani reaffirmed the Kurdistan Region's support for expanding cooperation and partnership between the governorates of Erbil and Baghdad across various sectors. He also stressed the importance of drawing on each other's successful experiences to improve governance and service delivery in both provinces.
The two sides also underlined the need for continued communication and coordination to advance reconstruction and development efforts in Erbil and Baghdad. Erbil Governor Omed Xoshnaw attended the meeting.
Erbil and Baghdad are among Iraq’s leading administrative and economic hubs. In recent years, officials from the two provinces have sought to deepen cooperation and exchange expertise in municipal services, urban planning, infrastructure development, and local governance as both cities face growing demands driven by population growth and urban expansion.
