ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iran targeted an Iranian Kurdish opposition group in Erbil in an overnight attack, injuring several members amid an escalation in the US-Iran war.
"Just now, a base of the Kurdistan #National #Army in Chemshar, near Dareshakran, was targeted in a drone attack by the #Iranian regime. Several #Peshmerga fighters were reportedly injured," Iranian Kurdish opposition group Kurdistan Freedom Party (PAK) posted on X, referring to its armed wing the Kurdistan National Army (PAK).
The base is located in Erbil province.
The statement came after Iran launched several strikes on multiple locations in the Kurdistan Region for a third consecutive night, with Friday's attacks leaving nine members of another Iranian Kurdish group, Komala, dead in Sulaimani city.
The Erbil-based Directorate General of Counter Terrorism (CTD) said 13 drones were intercepted over Erbil on Friday by the US-led global coalition, without causing casualties.
The Kurdistan Region Presidency and the Kurdistan Regional Government separately condemned the attacks, describing them as a dangerous escalation and a violation of the Region's sovereignty, while calling on Iran to halt the strikes and urging Baghdad and the international community to help stop the violations.
Meanwhile, Bafel Talabani, leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), on Saturday condemned Iran's ballistic missile strikes on the Kurdistan Region, calling them a "grave and unacceptable violation" of the Region's security and sovereignty and warning that the safety of the Kurdish people "is a boundary that cannot be crossed."
Qatar's foreign ministry strongly condemned the latest Iranian strikes on the Kurdistan Region on Saturday, describing the attacks as a "blatant violation of the sovereignty of the sisterly Republic of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, as well as a flagrant breach of the principles of international law."
