ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - An Iranian Kurdish opposition group said its base southwest of Erbil came under a drone attack in the early hours of Friday, with the extent of the damage still unknown.
The Khabat Organization of Iranian Kurdistan (Khabat) is one of several Iranian Kurdish opposition groups based in the Kurdistan Region that Tehran considers separatist.
The attack targeted the group's base in the Rizgari subdistrict, also known as Topzawa, within Erbil province's Khabat district.
Video footage obtained by Rudaw showed a large explosion after what local residents described as a drone strike, sparking a major fire at the site.
Khabat has not blamed any party for the attack. However, dozens of similar strikes have targeted Iranian Kurdish opposition groups in the Kurdistan Region in recent months, particularly the bases of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI) and Komala in Erbil and Sulaimani provinces.
The attacks intensified after the start of the US-Israeli aerial campaign against Iran in late February. Even during brief ceasefires between the warring sides, Iran continued launching missile and drone attacks against Iranian Kurdish opposition groups in the Kurdistan Region. Iran-backed armed groups in Iraq have also been involved in some of the attacks.
The Kurdistan Regional Government has repeatedly condemned the strikes, urging the federal government in Baghdad to prevent attacks launched from or through Iraqi territory.
