ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iran launched a drone attack on one of the bases of an Iranian Kurdish party in Sulaimani province’s Surdash subdistrict early Monday, setting part of the base on fire, according to the group.
Amjad Hussein Panahi, head of relations for the Komala of the Toilers of Kurdistan, said in a statement sent to Rudaw that three drones targeted the group’s positions at around 4:50 am.
The “heavy attack” resulted in the burning of parts of the base, he added.
He also said that Komala Peshmerga were unharmed because of “safety” measures taken by the group, which has come under dozens of drone and missile attacks by Tehran since the US and Israel launched an aerial offensive against Iran late February.
Sulaimani’s security forces (Asayish) confirmed in a statement that "a refugee camp in Surdash was attacked by three drones," adding that the strikes resulted in no casualties.
“According to Komala statistics, since the outbreak of the conflict between Iran and the United States to date, the number of missiles and drones used to target Komala's headquarters and camps has exceeded 108,” Panahi said.
Iran has not commented on the attack.
The attack comes amid renewed tensions between the US and Iran in recent weeks, with Tehran continuing attacking bases belonging to the Kurdish opposition groups in the Kurdistan Region.
On Friday, an Iranian border guard was killed during an armed clash with an unidentified opposition group near Paveh, a predominantly Kurdish city in western Iran close to the Kurdistan Region.
Iranian Kurdish opposition groups based in the Kurdistan Region have repeatedly accused Tehran of attacking their positions. Iran has long demanded that Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government disarm or expel the groups, arguing that they pose a security threat.
In mid-July, nine Komala members were killed in an Iranian missile strike on the group’s headquarters in Zirgwez, in Sulaimani province. Komala said the attack involved six missiles.
The attacks have also affected areas beyond the bases of Iranian Kurdish opposition groups.
Rudaw has recorded nearly 1,000 drone and missile attacks on the Kurdistan Region since the start of the US-Iran conflict, killing 32 people and wounding 154 others as of the beginning of August.
The Kurdistan Regional Government has repeatedly said the Region is not a party to the conflict and has called for an end to attacks on its territory.
