ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Police in Sulaimani province’s Garmiyan administration announced on Friday the arrest of an armed young man suspected of threatening preachers at several mosques in Kifri district in the name of the Islamic State (ISIS).
The suspect, a resident of Kifri, allegedly entered several mosques during Friday prayers and handed a number of preachers pieces of paper bearing the words “Islamic State” in Arabic.
“We have arrested a young man born in 2006 who was carrying a pistol. He is a resident of Kifri and is suspected of having links to ISIS after threatening several mosques,” Soran Mohammed Gharib, spokesperson for Garmiyan police, told Rudaw’s Hunar Hamid.
Gharib said an investigation had been launched into the incident and that the suspect had been handed over to the Asayish forces for further questioning.
Authorities have not confirmed whether the suspect has any actual links to ISIS.
ISIS seized large swathes of Iraq in 2014 before being territorially defeated in 2017. However, remnants of the group continue to pose a security threat, particularly in rural areas and territories disputed between Baghdad and Erbil.
