ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – Kuwait says three northern border posts and an offshore oil drilling platform were hit by drone attacks on Sunday, causing material damage and injuring one worker, as fighting between the US and Iran expands across the region.
Kuwait's Defense Ministry spokesperson Saud Abdulaziz al-Atwan said in a statement on the Kuwaiti Army's X account that the attacks targeted three land border sites in the north of the country, causing only material damage.
The ministry reported that an "enemy drone" also targeted an offshore drilling platform operated by a Kuwaiti oil company in the country's territorial waters. One worker was injured and is receiving medical treatment, while the platform sustained material damage.
The attacks came hours after the US intensified its military campaign against Iran after Iran launched repeated attacks targeting American assets and military bases in Bahrain and Qatar since Thursday. American forces had struck approximately 140 military targets, the third round of strikes against Iran in a week, following Tehran's attack on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
CENTCOM also said the Strait of Hormuz remains open to international shipping despite Iranian threats, adding that US forces continue to ensure freedom of navigation through the strategic waterway.
Meanwhile, Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency reported on Sunday that a telecommunications employee in the southern province of Hormozgan was killed in US attacks on Qeshm Island in Iran. Two of his colleagues were wounded.
The latest incidents come as renewed fighting between Washington and Tehran raises concerns of the war’s spillover to other countries in the Gulf. Trump declared on Wednesday an end to the ceasefire, raising concerns among Gulf countries over continued Iranian attacks on American assets stationed at the sites.
