Every great era recognizes its most profound changes only in hindsight. Artificial intelligence could be such a historic turning point. Public debate has so far focused mainly on its visible effects: automation, productivity, job losses, disinformation, surveillance. While these are important questions, they may hide a development whose significance goes much further.
The real question is not what machines can do - it is this: What happens to people when answers become available before they have learned to live with unanswered questions?
I have worked for decades with people who survived war, persecution and genocide. This work has made one difference especially clear to me: the difference between a documented history and a remembered history.
A person tells of a massacre. Artificial intelligence may be able to describe the same historical event more completely, with a more accurate chronology and more polished language.
But the person tells something different. They tell not only what happened, but what that event did to a person and to later generations.
When a survivor of war or genocide tells their story, they do not simply pass on information. They pass on experience.
When a grandmother speaks of fleeing, she does not simply convey historical facts. She conveys fear, hope, loss, and the will to survive. When communities remember their dead, they preserve more than history. They preserve responsibility.
Trauma research in particular shows that people do not heal through knowledge alone. They heal through relationships, recognition, remembrance, and the ability to give meaning to their suffering. Healing is not a purely biological process. It is a cultural and social process.
These forms of human remembrance make up the true cultural memory of humanity.
This, for me, is the heart of the challenge that artificial intelligence presents, beyond the familiar idea of humans versus machines. A generation could grow up receiving answers before it has had the experience of searching.
Which mental abilities might be practiced less often if we need them less and less: doubt, patience, the ability to live without knowing, independent judgment, and perhaps even the experience of failure?
Human beings are not merely biological. They are cultural beings. They do not live only in an objective reality, but in a world shaped by language, memory, experience, and shared meanings. What we consider true, what we believe, how we understand ourselves, and what future we imagine do not arise in a vacuum. They arise in families, communities, cultures, and historical experiences.
For thousands of years, this knowledge was passed from one generation to the next. Not only through facts, but through stories. Not only through information, but through experience.
Cultures developed rituals, symbols, and traditions to pass on what people considered essential. Religions, myths, literature, and philosophy grew from attempts to answer the basic questions of human existence: Where do we come from? Why do we suffer? What does justice mean? What remains of us? How can people live with loss, guilt, love, hope, and death?
These systems were by no means always sources of wisdom. In the name of religions, ideologies, nations, and cultures, people were persecuted, excluded, and killed. Human history is not only a history of creating meaning, but also a history of violence. The Crusades, the Inquisitions, colonialism, religious fanaticism, nationalism, dictatorships, and genocides remind us that cultural and religious systems could serve both as instruments of domination and as sources of guidance.
Yet, that is precisely why they have a deeper significance. The collective memory of humanity does not consist only of its successes. It also contains its errors, its crimes, and its painful processes of learning. Humanity did not make progress because it was always right. It made progress because it had to learn from its mistakes.
Cultural memory contains not only knowledge, but also the experience of human error and catastrophe. The experience of oppression led people to dream of democracy. The collective memory of humanity therefore does not consist of data. It consists of experience.
This may be where one of the most profound effects of artificial intelligence lies.
Artificial intelligence can draw on enormous amounts of human knowledge and generate answers from it. But it has no lived experience. It can describe historical events, but it cannot remember them. It can document suffering, but it cannot suffer. It can write about hope, but it cannot hope. It can imitate the language of humanity without sharing human experience.
At first, this difference may seem obvious. But its importance could grow considerably in the future.
The present generation experiences artificial intelligence as a tool. For later generations, it may become simply a normal part of life. Children born today may grow up in a world where intelligent systems are everywhere. They will receive answers before they have to search for long. They will find information without going to libraries or archives and without having to acquire knowledge through the difficult paths that earlier generations had to follow.
Many decisions will be prepared, many texts written, many problems structured in advance.
At first, this is enormous progress. Knowledge becomes more accessible. Education can become more democratic. Research is accelerated. Medical diagnoses could become more precise. The opportunities are enormous.
But every technological extension also changes the abilities that people themselves still need.
Writing reduced the burden on memory and changed the way we remember. The calculator changed the way we deal with numbers. Navigation systems changed our sense of spatial orientation. Artificial intelligence may now change the way people think. It does not replace thinking. It favors certain forms of thinking.
Modern AI systems are based on pattern recognition, probabilities, and optimization. They produce answers that appear statistically plausible. They reduce complexity, organize information, and create a sense of certainty through language. Their strength lies in creating order where people often experience uncertainty.
Yet, that is precisely where their ambivalence lies.
Artificial intelligence calculates probabilities. The more powerful such systems become, the greater the temptation may be to mistake their answers for truth. A precisely worded answer sounds convincing. A fast answer seems competent. A consistent answer seems reliable.
But truth is more than plausibility. Our view of what we may regard as true is formed through scrutiny, doubt, and judgment.
If this distinction is lost, a new form of dependence emerges: not so much dependence on the machine itself as dependence on a particular way of thinking.
A world increasingly structured by algorithms could push other forms of knowledge to the margins: intuition, experience, cultural memory, literary imagination, philosophical doubt, and the ability to think beyond what can be calculated immediately.
This would raise not only a technical question, but an anthropological one. What happens to a society that is less and less used to thinking outside prescribed patterns? What happens to future generations when they receive answers before they have experienced the search for them? What happens to critical thinking when algorithms increasingly point the way and people themselves increasingly stop finding their own way?
The danger is not that people become less intelligent. The danger is that certain forms of intellectual independence are needed less often. For thousands of years, learning meant more than acquiring knowledge. Learning meant effort. It meant asking questions, making mistakes, reaching dead ends, failing, and starting again. The knowledge itself was often less formative than the path toward it.
Along this path, judgment, patience, humility, and intellectual independence developed.
Future generations may grow up in a world where answers are available almost instantly. This is progress. But when answers are always available, the meaning of the question itself may change.
People may learn to solve problems without fully understanding them. They may argue without going through the difficult process of thinking for themselves. They may make decisions without understanding the deeper connections.
This would change the relationship people have with themselves.
For thousands of years, conscience, experience, memory, and self reflection were central sources of human guidance. They were not always right. They were, however, expressions of personal responsibility. As we increasingly move our guidance outside ourselves, responsibility may one day follow.
People would not necessarily make fewer decisions, but they might less often feel that they themselves are the authors of their decisions.
This is where a philosophical challenge of historic importance begins.
Human maturity often develops where people must endure uncertainty. Where they make decisions even though they do not know all the answers. Where they take responsibility even though mistakes are possible. Where they learn to live with contradictions.
With artificial intelligence, the temptation grows to believe that ever larger parts of our world can be calculated and predicted. This is helpful in many areas. But a world that could be fully calculated and predicted would no longer be a human world.
Human life is shaped by surprises, encounters, chance, and unexpected turns. Love cannot be optimized, and friendship cannot be calculated.
Creativity and healing are also more complex than they first appear: artificial intelligence can produce astonishing images, texts, and melodies, and algorithmic tools can certainly support therapeutic processes.
What is essential to psychological healing remains, as work with survivors clearly shows, tied to relationships, recognition, and lived experience. Hope, too, is more than a prediction. It is an attitude that people can offer themselves and one another.
The danger of artificial intelligence, therefore, is not that it destroys culture.
The greater danger may be that it gradually changes the conditions under which culture is created and passed on. If knowledge is increasingly organized by machines, the connection between information and experience may weaken.
History would remain available, but its emotional and moral meaning could fade. Testimonies would be stored without themselves becoming memory.
As a result, humanity could lose something that cannot be captured in datasets: the ability to turn memory into wisdom.
Wisdom is fundamentally different from knowledge. Knowledge answers questions. Wisdom asks which questions should be asked in the first place.
Knowledge explains the world, while wisdom asks what it means. Knowledge makes us powerful, whereas wisdom makes us responsible.
Human history has always also been a history of going beyond limits. People wanted to see horizons that no one had seen before. They wanted to ask questions for which there were no answers. They wanted to cross boundaries even though no one knew what lay beyond them.
Epic literature, poetry, religion, philosophy, and science all spring from the same source: the desire to go beyond what is known.
It is precisely this desire that has moved humanity forward: the courage to reach for the improbable, the ability to imagine what does not yet exist. More than simply adapting to what is probable, more than repeating what is already known.
Perhaps this is the most important task in the age of artificial intelligence.
Not to fear the technology.
But not to forget the human being.
We must learn to use AI without surrendering our judgment to it. We must recognize its possibilities without ignoring its limits. We must shape education, culture, and science so that people not only find the right answers, but learn to ask better questions.
The future will not depend on whether machines become more intelligent. It will depend on whether people preserve the ability to wonder, to doubt, to dream, and to imagine realities that are not yet in any dataset.
For the greatest discovery of humanity was never the machine.
It was the freedom of the human spirit.
