ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - An improvised explosive device detonated in a bus in the Druze-majority city of Jaramana southeast of the Syrian capital of Damascus on Thursday, killing two people and injuring 13 others, state media reported, amid ongoing security challenges facing Syria's interim government.
“Two people were killed and 13 others injured as a result of the bus explosion in Jaramana in the Damascus countryside,” Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported, citing the health ministry’s ambulance and emergency Directorate.
Meanwhile, the Syrian interior ministry later reported that “a security deployment is underway around the site of an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion inside a public transport vehicle (service bus) in the city of Jaramana.”
Since the December 2024 ouster of longtime Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, the new leadership in Damascus, led by interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa, has faced a series of security challenges and insurgent incidents as it works to stabilize the country.
An early June blast at a cafe on al-Nasr Street near the Palace of Justice in Damascus killed nine people and injured dozens more in what the Interior Ministry described as a “terrorist explosion.”
The deadliest incident since Assad's fall, however, was the late June 2025 suicide attack on the Mar Elias Greek Orthodox Church in Damascus during a Sunday service, which killed at least 25 people and injured over 60 others. Syrian authorities pointed to the Islamic State's (ISIS) involvement in that attack.
