ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A series of Israeli strikes targeted “terror infrastructure” in Syria in retaliation for cross-border fire from the Golan Heights, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said on Sunday. “In response to the attack towards the Golan Heights region yesterday, IDF warplanes attacked terror infrastructure in Syria a short while ago,” the IDF said in a statement on X. On Saturday, the IDF struck targets in Syrian territory after sirens were sounded in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights over projectiles fired from Syria. Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in 1967 during the Six-Day War and annexed it years later in 1981 – a move that has never been recognized by the United Nations. Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes on regime-controlled areas of Syria throughout its 12-year civil war, often claiming to strike pro-Iran militias, such as Lebanon’s Hezbollah group which supports the Syrian army. On Sunday, the IDF said its army jets struck Hezbollah infrastructure in Lebanon after the group launched rockets toward northern Israel. While it rarely comments on strikes attributed to it in Syria, Israel has repeatedly warned that it would not tolerate its arch-rival Iran to gain a foothold there.
