ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - A massive chain-reaction collision involving seven vehicles left at least 10 people dead and 61 others injured in Turkey’s northwestern Sakarya province on Thursday, amid a dense fog causing limited visibility.
The accident, involving three intercity buses and one truck, occurred on the Northern Marmara Highway near the Dagdibi neighborhood of Sakarya.
"An investigation has been initiated by the Sakarya Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the accident, and 3 public prosecutors have been assigned under the coordination of a deputy chief public prosecutor,” Turkish Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc wrote on X.
The injured are receiving treatment in eight hospitals in Sakarya and two in Kocaeli province, according to Sakarya Governor Yasar Karadeniz.
"It is assumed that it started with a car hitting a truck. Then other vehicles crashed into them,” said Karadeniz, adding that some of the victims are people who were struck by a vehicle after having left their own.
A detention order was issued for the drivers of all seven vehicles, according to Turkish state media, which added that six of them have already been detained while the seventh is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
A passenger bus and two trucks collided in the Kurdish city of Agri, southeast Turkey (Northern Kurdistan) in November of last year, killing at least seven people and injuring dozens others.
Nearly 100 people were injured when four metrobuses collided in Istanbul in September 2022.
