ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Iranian intelligence agencies are planning operations against two US bases in Germany, a German media outlet claimed Thursday, amid recent reports that American bomber aircraft were being moved from the UK over concerns about potential Iranian attacks.
The privately owned WirtschaftsWoche said its “research” identified the bases as Ramstein Air Base in Rhineland-Palatinate, in southwestern Germany, and Spangdahlem Air Base in the Eifel region of the same state.
Ramstein is the largest US Air Force installation outside the United States. It serves as a strategic hub for US and NATO operations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
According to the German outlet, the air base houses a “satellite relay station” that coordinates signals for US drones in the Middle East. Citing “Western intelligence officials,” the WirtschaftsWoche said the Ramstein and Spangdahlem bases have come under “scrutiny” from Iranian intelligence services over “their direct involvement” in the Iran war.
On Monday, The New York Times, citing a US official, reported that Israel had warned Germany that the US bases in question faced a “heightened risk” of being targeted by Iran.
Meanwhile, British authorities on Friday detained five men on suspicion of explosives offenses and of planning a terrorist attack near RAF Fairford, a base used by the US military in the country. UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said there were “strong indications” that Iran had played a role in the suspected security incident near the base.
RAF Fairford is housing B-52 and B-1 nuclear-capable strategic bombers reportedly used in recent regional military operations, including the US bombing of three nuclear facilities in Iran in June 2025.
The New York Times’s Monday report, citing American and British officials, said the US had “abruptly” pulled out “all 12 B-1” bombers from the base following the reception of information about a “potential drone attack ordered by” Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
The New York Times' Monday report, citing American and British officials, said the US had “abruptly” pulled “all 12 B-1” bombers from the base after receiving information about a “potential drone attack ordered by” the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). US Vice President JD Vance on the same day noted that the bombers had been relocated “out of an abundance of caution trying to protect our guys.”
For his part, Ali Fadavi, the IRGC’s chief advisor, earlier in the week threatened that his country’s forces will target “every location related to the Americans” if the US launched a ground offensive against Iran.
