Shop in Kalar serves tea during day, shows films at night
KALAR, Kurdistan Region- A teahouse in Kalar city, 105 km south of Sulaimani province, was recently renovated in April. Since then, the teahouse has doubled as a cinema theatre at night.
“Millet”, or “people” in Kurdish, has become a meeting spot and cultural hub for the youth in the city.
With no cinemas in Kalar, the owners of Millet saw an opportunity to use the teahouse to fill the gap.
They screen films in Kurdish, Persian, and English, and makes an effort to show films from the Kurdistan region.
The teahouse functions as both a meeting point and a cultural centre, offering youth access to films, poetry readings, and political forums.
