A group of Kurdish artists paid a visit on Sunday to veteran Kurdish actor Omer Chawshin at Erbil’s Elders House, following a call from Kurdish comedian Ahmed Jula to honor his decades-long service to Kurdish drama.
Born in 1942 in Sulaimani province, Chawshin – a stage name meaning ‘blue eyes’ - became a prolific theatre and film actor from the late sixties onwards.
He has played various roles, including those of women at a time when the presence of actresses in stage roles was culturally taboo.
However, financial hardship forced him to sell his apartment and seek refuge at the home for the elderly in Erbil.
Chawshin thanked the artists for a visit that brought a rare smile to his face in a time of adversity.
“I regard them as my siblings. I never expected that all these artists would gather here [one day] and honor me. I really thank them,” he said.
“We feel good for doing a great deed,” Jula told Rudaw at the Elders House, adding that this visit would not be their last.
Dina, a Kurdish singer who took part in the visit, told Rudaw she remembered a number of Chawshin’s films, “including those in black and white.”
