Turkey 'intensely' resumes bombing mountainous areas of Kurdistan Region
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Turkish warplanes launched fresh airstrikes against alleged PKK positions nearby villages and mountainous areas of the Bradost area in Sidakan, northern Erbil province and Mount Qnadil on Sunday night, confirmed an official.
Ihsan Chalabi, mayor of Sidakan town told Rudaw “Since 8 a.m. Turkish unmanned drones had been flying overhead and started bombing the villages and mountain areas of Sarchaman, Khuakurk, Lolan, Khinera, and Bestoon at 7:50 p.m.”
Chalabi added that Turkey’s long-range artillery shells continue on Gali Balinda and Khuakurk.
“This time artillery shells and bombings are very intense and instilling fear among the villagers.”
Concerning bombings against the outskirts of Mount Qandil, Kwestan Ahmed, Ruwanduz’ mayor told Rudaw “the warplanes have been intensely bombing the villages of Bokriskan and the mountainous areas of the Warte region.”
He said the bombings have not caused any human losses, but incurred massive material damages such as many orchards and groves of locals having caught fire.
In the Pishdar region, the villages of Baste and Maradoo have also come under bombardments, resulting in the destruction of a cemetery.
Turkey has recently accelerated its aerial and ground campaigns against PKK fighters in the mountainous areas of the northern parts of the Kurdistan Region.
As part of its military operation, the Turkish army has pushed 10 kilometers deep into the Region, occupying 28 villages.
Turkey began an anti-PKK border operation on March 10 in northern Duhok, Erbil, and Sulaimani provinces.
The PKK, a named a terror organization in Turkey, the US and the UK, has its headquarters in Kurdistan’s Qandil Mountains. The PKK is an armed group fighting for greater political and minority rights in Turkey.
