New Peshmerga reinforcements headed to Kobane

KOBANE BORDER—Kurdish forces and Islamic State (ISIS) militants exchanged heavy fire west of Kobane on Monday, as new Peshmerga reinforcements are expected to arrive in the town.

The ISIS attacked the village of Tel Sher and the western outskirts of Kobane with anti-aircraft guns and mortar fire, said Rudaw correspondent, and the Peshmerga responded with artillery.

Some of the fighting took place near the radio tower and the village of Zorava and the Peshmerga engaged the Islamist militants in street fights in parts of the city.

Colonel Shawkat said that 150 Peshmerga fighters are to leave the Kurdistan Region on Tuesday to replace the Peshmerga forces sent to Kobane in October.

Helped by coalition airstrikes the Peoples Protection Units (YPG) and the Peshmerga are defending Kobane against ISIS militants who attacked the city early September and still hold parts of the city.

Commanders said that 13 Peshmerga have been wounded so far and four of them have been returned to Kurdistan for treatment.

Kurdish leaders inside the city reported that in the past two days they have killed more than 50 ISIS militants.
