Kurdish woman dedicates life to combating FGM

A Kurdish activist from WADI is trying to eradicate FGM. She has been campaigning for years to fight domestic abuse and make families aware of the health, psychological and social consequences of female genital mutilation.

 

FGM was practiced in the Kurdistan Region for many years, but statistics and surveys show that the numbers have dropped in recent years. Perpetrators of FGM could face up to three years of prison and a fine of $80,000.

 

Rasul believes more needs to be done to fully eradicate the practice.

 

“In light of the law combating domestic abuse, we are presenting a seminar for women in this village revolving around the harm of female genital mutilation from legal, religious, and social aspects; as well as explaining the health damages female genital mutilation causes.”
