ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Thursday held a phone call with Geza Andreas von Geyr, State Secretary of the German Federal Foreign Office, regarding the recent attacks on Kurdistan, during which the German official reaffirmed his country's support for the Region.
According to a statement from President Nechirvan Barzani's office, von Geyr "condemned the ongoing attacks on the Kurdistan Region, particularly the attack on President Nechirvan Barzani’s residence in Duhok," stressing Germany’s commitment "to the stability of both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region."
He reiterated his country’s "full support and solidarity with the Kurdistan Region,” read the statement from the Kurdistan Region Presidency.
The phone call comes after the residence of President Nechirvan Barzani in Duhok province was targeted by a drone attack on Saturday, without resulting in any casualties. No party has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
During the call, President Barzani expressed gratitude for Germany’s stance, highlighting the strong bilateral relationship, emphasizing that the Region "is committed to upholding peace and stability in both Iraq and the region.
"The President also thanked Germany for its assistance to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and conveyed the Kurdistan Region’s aspiration to enhance collaboration and relations across all sectors."
The conversation also covered the political situation in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, as well as recent developments in the ongoing conflict and its repercussions.
For weeks, the Kurdistan Region has been caught in the crosshairs of the Iran-Israel-US conflict, with Iraqi pro-Iran armed groups aligned with the Tehran-led “Axis of Resistance” carrying out hundreds of strikes on alleged American targets in the Region since the onset of the conflict on February 28, according to Rudaw tracking.
Last week, an Iranian ballistic missile attack killed six Peshmerga fighters and injured dozens more in Erbil province.
The assaults have continued despite repeated assurances from Kurdish leaders that the Region is not a party to the conflict and will not allow its territory to be used as a launchpad for attacks against neighboring countries, including Iran.
