Around 100 contracted teachers gathered in front of the Council of Ministers building in Erbil on Monday, demanding permanent employment from the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
Contracted teachers lack some of the rights of their permanently employed counterparts, with no retirement benefits and a flat rate of pay regardless of attained qualifications.
Protester placards asked “How long will we stay being contracted employees?”
A statement read by one of the protest organizers warned that they will continue their “civil” protests until their demands are met.
The statement added that the government is “disappointing 6,000 teachers and the next generation.”
Another placard from the protest read: "Promise with action and do not repeat the same thing you did last year."
KRG officials said they may make the employment of contracted teachers who have three years of service permanent in 2018, but to no avail.
Calls on the new KRG cabinet to “prioritize” their employment could also be read on protest signs.
