Barzani meets Peshmerga commanders in Kirkuk
KIRKUK, Kurdistan Region – Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani travelled to Kirkuk on Monday, meeting with Peshmerga military commanders to discuss the independence referendum and security in Kirkuk.
Barzani “stressed the protection of stability, peace, and the fraternal coexistence of the components of the city of Kirkuk in particular and Kurdistan in general. He also stressed that Kirkuk is a Kurdistani city which should become an example for the coexistence of nations and religions,” according to a statement from the Kurdistan Region Presidency.
Regarding the referendum in general, Barzani reiterated that it is a peaceful message that does not contravene the Iraqi constitution or any international agreement. “Rather, it is a tool to give legitimacy to the wish and decision of Kurdistan’s nation to determine their future,” Barzani said.
Following the referendum, which saw 92.7 percent support independence from Iraq, the central government in Baghdad rejected the result and have enacted several measures against Kurdistan, including ordering the deployment of Iraqi forces to disputed areas such as Kirkuk.
Baghdad has refused to talk with the Kurdistan leadership unless the Region negates the referendum.
